One Night in Footscray 2019 event identity & communications
- Andrew Ashton Design
Developed over 8 months this communication project is about the night, place, a modest budget (AU$ 3,500) and community.
One Night in Footscray is what that name states – an intersection of the Australian multicultural experience in art, food and experience under the guise of an all seeing, bright smiling moon.
Numerous cultures and languages come together in Footscray and to access a diverse community we championed semiotics – the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.
We championed semiotics – the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.
We focused on the night, over specific offers. Research revealed that the Moon is a prominent, welcome symbol across many cultures. We consulted the Moon Cycle chart on the 22.11 – it has a Waning Crescent moon – we based our new symbol on this phenomena. A hand drawn yet icon image making system was developed – as Footscay is a hands-on people community. The hands-on feel was continued and where possible all of the graphic material was hand made.
Footscray is a truly unique corner of the community and we felt we had to put away contemporary graphic design trends (clean fonts, highly directed images, austere layouts and on-trend colours) and make work that is immediate, impactful and cheap to rollout.
What did we do?
All language communication
Brand and image making
