Boroondara Arts Festival Identity

Each year the city of Boroondara runs an extensive arts program through its venues. In previous years they’ve produced a publication that showcased all programs exhibiting at Boroondara Arts. The challenge for this brief was to raise the bar! Discovering that the name ‘Boroondara’ is a word in the Woiwurrung language meaning ‘where the ground is thickly shaded’ we developed an integrated design solution centred around a hero stop-motion animation piece.

After discovering the meaning of the word ‘Boroondara’ we began creating mockups of the final identity piece. Next we researched the local flora and fauna in the Boroondara area and created paper-crafted versions of the foliage. After finalising the word-mark we animated the hero video and formatted it for use throughout various festival events and social media marketing. We also created a series of secondary collateral including a way-finding system for the festival, a publication, posters and various social media advertising.


Inside the publication we implemented a cleaner design and larger format than previous programs. We developed a navigational system with the typography to help readers quickly identify which venue was featured on each page. The branding identity also extended into various social media, audio visual pieces and a way-finding system used to advertise the festival.
