Space & Co, part of the GPT Group offers premium, flexible co-working solutions. Wanting to deliver a premium offering to its clientele at 8 Exhibition St, Melbourne, Space & Co engaged WMK to utilise its well-established design language of exposing the raw elements of the space and added a layer of refinement that echoed the premium grade of the building. The new space offers a unique way of working for members whilst offering panoramic views of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks.
Incorporating Space & Co’s existing foundation of quality, WMK translated established design aesthetic of raw and exposed to a more premium offering. This new experience saw WMK create the guiding concept of Raw / Refined. The intent was to maintain the Space & Co DNA (Raw) but juxtapose it against more refined elements to provide a superior yet affordable offering to its clients.
WMK successfully balanced the raw with the refined, maintaining key elements such as the common area floors and ceilings but balanced these with plush carpets, soft leather furnishings and the soft luster of stainless steel.
Space & Co now has a much larger offering in Melbourne that is cohesive with its brand positioning and seamlessly transitions between the old and the new.
The new premises have enabled Space & Co to accommodate in Sydney and Melbourne a growing market of sophisticated corporates and small to medium size enterprises looking for access to premium contemporary workspaces, state of the art facilities and luxury amenities.
The space offers a range of collaborative zones for individuals and teams to come together and share ideas as well as facilitate connection with like-minded leaders from a wide range of industries.
The design-led transformation relied heavily on stripping away the existing layers of a building to expose and celebrate the structure. WMK’s colour and design palette is predominantly neutral and raw – realised through simple design language, exposed/raw materials and considered details.
The Space & Co model is supported through an active, open work zone which allows larger teams to connect back to perimeter team rooms. Collaborative & contemplative spaces are positioned to take advantage of the buildings unique floor plate.
WMK delivered a consistent and scalable approach for all future fit-outs to maintain an ability to offer access to premium workspaces at an affordable price.
In Collaboration with Space & Co, WMK has crafted a member’s kitchen complete with functioning oven/cooktop making it more akin to a residential kitchen than a commercial breakout space. This communal space functions as the main social hub for the site, bringing together members from a diverse range of businesses to cook & share insights over food.
WMK worked closely with retail lighting designers Ambience to create a specific level of illumination for the space. Paying close attention to their background in customer experience, the team worked to achieve a softer, lower level of lighting creating a more intimate user experience.
WMK created a series of shared spaces that allow the members to come together away from the core of the workspace. One such space was the “greenhouse” a nod to the gardens viewable from the floor but not accessible. This re-interpretation of a greenhouse brings the outdoors in, creating a workshop and pitch space for members surrounded by plants that hang from the ceiling.
