The brief involved a residential conversation and additions to an inner city heritage building originally conceived as horses stables. The clients sought a highly contemporary space that was juxtaposed with the raw materials of the original building. They required the kitchen was to function as the “helm of the ship”: a light filled and airy space that would act as the steering point of the living and dining areas of the house.
The kitchen is designed as a series of free standing sculptural forms that act to divide the larger open plan space of the stables into discrete zones of living and dining. High gloss paint finishes and a polished concrete floor act to accentuate the sense of expansive volume and light. The colour palette draws upon the hues of clouds and sky.
