Description

Designed specifically for younger children, the b.box insulated food jar (IFJ) encompasses a unique set of features that enable smaller hands to open and use it independently and easily. Perfect for kids to use at kindy/school, the IFJ not only keeps food warm or cold for hours, it has twin handles on the base and a handle on the lid providing leverage for kids to open the jar by themselves. Its removable arms and bumper allow the product to achieve a more ‘grown-up’ appearance, enabling the product to grow with the child and thereby increasing the lifespan of the product.

Key Features

1

Our challenge was to create an IFJ specifically for young children that they could open by themselves and maintain food temperature. It also needed to be durable, light weight, leak proof and visually appealing.
Most like products are not designed with young children in mind. During user testing, we found young children had difficulty opening many competitor products and needed adult assistance. Our IFJ has the ideal combination and positioning of the top handle lid and twin handles on the base to provide kids leverage enabling them to carry, open and eat from the product independently.

2

The b.box IFJ empowers kids to open, hold, eat and use the product on their own – helping to develop independence and motor skills. It gives parents more options when preparing lunches and encourages kids to eat a variety of healthy hot and cold foods when outside the home. It also provides a substitute for prepackaged foods, which helps to reduce rubbish/landfill. The jar can be transformed from toddler to big kid aesthetic, increasing the lifespan of the product. Its addition has also enabled us to extend our relationship with current consumers who generally have children ages 6mths – 3yrs.

3

b.box has invested significantly in building an in-house team of dynamic and creative product and graphic designers and product engineers. This has enabled us to commercialise ideas faster and bring to market products that truly redefine. As a design-led, child-focused product company, professional design drives everything we do. It’s our DNA.
We think about the child and the parent. What do each need from the product and how can we best solve their challenge? But we never assume. We do our market and user research, listening to what our customers want. We involve kids, parents, retailers and distributors in our design process. This ensures the product is commercially viable and will resonate with the end-user.

4

The design of the jar solves one of the key problems young kids face when trying to open insulated jars – they lack the strength and dexterity to do so. The b.box insulated food jar has the ideal combination and positioning of the top handle lid and twin handles on the base so kids can generate the force they need by using the handle and lid as levers. The unique stop feature ensures the lid cannot be over-tightened. Its wide opening allows young kids to access the contents easily. Added utensil stows away in the bumper, which also provides extra durability.
